Here is a special item that was donated to our charity by a long-time supporter who has donated a number of items to us from the Negro Leagues Baseball. Our charity has donated a number of these items to the Southern Negro Baseball Museum here in Birmingham. We recently pulled this piece from a box of old souvenir programs (mostly NASCAR) that was part of his huge collection that he donated to us about 7 years ago.
This is an official program from the 1946 East-West Negro Leagues baseball all-star game held at Comiskey Park in Chicago. This
8.25 x 11" 48 page program for the August 18, 1946 game was the second of two East-West games in 1946. The West avenged their loss from three days earlier, beating the East, 4-1. Over 45,000 fans turned out to watch the contest. It was the last East-West Game to feature Josh Gibson. Other players as listed on the unused scorecard of the center spread are: East- Henry Kimbro, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Buck Leonard; West- Sam Jethroe, Quincy Trouppe. Coaches listed include Biz Mackey and Frank Duncan. One page has photos of the 1945 All-America team. 12 players shown in uniform includes Josh Gibson, Quincy Trouppe, Buck Leonard, Sam Jethroe. One page has photo of the 1945 World Championship Team Cleveland Buckeyes w/Trouppe. One page has Philadelphia Stars team photo on top half and text tribute to Leon Day on the bottom half. One page has the title "Four Of America's Greats" with full figure images in uniform of Johnny Davis, Dickie Seay, Lennie Pearson, Bill Byrd. Full page photo of Dr. J. B. Martin, President of the Negro American Baseball League. Several additional pages feature text information about the Negro Leagues and/or their presidents and other officers, owners and teams. Most of the remaining pages are advertising for local businesses, many African-American owned & operated, some w/photos of the proprietors. Both the cover and contents are in very fine condition. Hard to believe this is from 1946 but it was obviously was kept sealed and not handled much since new. This
historic program for the featured some of the greatest Negro League stars of all time and future members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
